Year 2 explore coastal erosion!

Yesterday our Year 2 children looked at coastal erosion in their geography lesson.

After enjoying a presentation, we asked the children to describe what erosion is and how the coastline erodes. We used a tray with sand and water to demonstrate how waves cause coastal erosion and asked the children to look carefully at the waves of water as they hit the sand and to describe what was happening. They used vocabulary such as ‘washing away’, ‘crumbling’, ‘breaking’ and ‘eroding’ in their descriptions. We then challenged the children to see if they could prevent the water from washing the sand away and they built stone walls to protect it. The children recorded their learning and thought about the question ‘What effects do you think erosion can cause to a coastal location over time?’ Super work from everyone!
